News from the Knittery

We haven't had a newsletter for a while. This does not mean we have been sitting and twiddling our fingers. Many scarves, socks, and such have been started, and some even finished.

As for what is new, we have added Monday hours. Monday hours will be from 11am to 4pm Right now the plan is to have these hours for the summer and re-evaluate for the winter months.

Brenda has the Thursday evening hours 6pm-8pm and Sundays 12pm-4pm. There are some Thursdays when the shop will close from 5-6. Please call if you need to know if that hour will be open or not.

Mosaic Knitting

This is a new favorite project. Mosaic knitting is a great way to get two color geometric patterns without carrying two colors of yarn. This pattern look is created with slipped stitiches. This technique can either be worked flat or in the round. This opens up many possible projects. Janelle has been exploring this technique and is offering to get people started on Mondays. She may offer a class later this fall.

To create the mosaic knitting, you can use either holey scarf or gathered stole. These are both free patterns from skacelknitting.com.

Both use one skein of either laceball or laceball 100. Both are lace weight and have 800 meters (870 yds) Laceball is 75% superwash wool and 25% nylon. Laceball 100 is 100% wool. If you are wondering about colors, there are some amazing ones. They have great color that runs in anything from neutrals to rainbows.

Pattern Designers Who Excite and Delight

I am always coming across knitting pattern writers who excite me. There are many that customers have told me about. Let us know if you find a new designer you like.

I will start out by highlighting Martina Behm. She is a German designer who many of you already know her shawl/scarf patterns Hitchhiker and Leftie. She states on her Ravelry designer page that she knits because she loves to create. She tries to design the patterns so they are fun as well as beautiful. She loves easy, mindless projects with very few purl stitches. She understands the business of life as she is the mother of two in a small village in the very north of Germany.

June 2015
World Wide Knit in-Public Week Crazy Days Cat Bordhi

World Wide Knit in Public Week

World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes. It began as away for knitters to come together and enjoy each other's company. Knitting is such a solitary act that it's easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about al the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits. This is a specific week to get out of your house and go to a local event (with your knitting in two) just for you and people like you. Who knows, you might even bump into your neighbor! Consider this a spark to ignite a fire, getting all of the closeted knitters out into fresh air. (summary taken from www.wwkipday.com)

In celebration of national Knit-in-Public Week from June 13 through June 21, the Blue Heron Knittery is offering 20% off on yarn, notions, books, magazines, and patterns.

So, come knit with us!

Crazy Days

Crazy Days in Decorah is July 18th this year. That event starts at 8:00am as opposed to 7:00am as it has in years past (which Sarah is very happy about!) The Farmers' Market is going to be up on Water Street as well with music and many great deals. We hope to see you there!
